Transformers: The Movie 20th Anniversary Special Edition



Go buy this. Now. Even if you have the Rhino version. Sony has given the treatment that the Transformers always deserved on DVD but never got with this set.
I picked it up this week, and loved it. The colors are much brighter and richer this time around, owing to Sony's painstaking restoration. On the first disc, you'll see a side-by-side comparison with the Rhino version, and it's like night and day.

My favorite special feature has to be the old toy commercials. Most of them a re from Japan, but they're so deliciously strange to American audiences, so they have to be seen to be believed. There weren't very many American ones, but I assume that those are being saved for Sony's rerelease of the G1 TV series next year. Hopefully that will have as much time and effort put into its restoration as well as some color-correcting.

This package is on two discs- the first disc is a widescreen presentation of the film, while the second is fullscreen. I like my movies to be widescreen, so I'll watch that version most often. But as some TF fans are ever sticklers for things to be as they were, the fullscreen version is included since TF: The Movie was technically not a widescreen film even though it was released theatrically. Go figure. But it's there in both flavors.

I bought this at Wal-Mart because it was the only place I found it at. My local Best Buy didn't have it out yet, and Target was sold out. I'm actually glad I bought it there. Wal-Mart has a little freebie with theirs, an Autobot logo iron-on transfer.
I actually remember having some iron-ons that related to this movie on a shirt when I was a kid. Back when it was in theaters, of course. If I recall correctly, they came with Ziploc bags, and my mother used a lot of those. My memory on the exact characters is far from perfect, however. I clearly remember there being three iron-ons, and one of them was Wreck-Gar. That one I'm sure of. I think another one was Galvatron, and I'm not sure on the last one at all. Either Ultra Magnus or Rodimus Prime. Those looked something like this:

Neat, aren't they? I stole those images from ebay just now, but I'll probably end up buying them too.

I like this movie, and I'm happy with the purchase. Plus, I get to hear Stan Bush songs in 5.1!

Here is your competition, from the 2009 GI Joe live-action movie. As you can see, it is patently ridiculous. Folks at Warner Brothers, you know you can do better than Paramount, the entity producing GI Joe. Just because it's based on a cartoon from the 1980s doesn't mean it still has to look ridiculous in a different way. I beg you, Warner Brothers, to look at what made the original property so charming in the first place, and not "update" or leatherize it. Some people say it worked for the X-Men franchise, but the only thing that time has proven about that is that copying that idea is bringing down genre films as a whole. I know you are worried about profits, since it's expensive to make movies, but not everything has to appeal to teenagers. Yes, they have money, but people who actually played with He-Man toys in the 1980s have lots more money, and some of them even have kids. That's what she said. Yes, the Star Wars Legacy Collection Millennium Falcon has been found and purchased at retail. Retail in Canada, anyway. Hell, for all we know, they're in the backroom of your local USA Toys R Us, waiting for the July 26th launch. After seeing the comparison between that and the original Falcon toy, I've come to realize there's no fucking way I can buy this. $150 really isn't a lot of money for what we're getting here (especially when you consider the $4-a-gallon gas these days), but it's just that I can't possibly put this thing anywhere. That thing is the size of a coffee table, and my apartment has no room for one of those. Plus, I have the 1995 POTF2 and 2004 OTC Falcons. Redundant doesn't even begin to describe this purchase. GI Joe wave 7

or 2008 wave 3 if you're going that way. Clicky. I think they're all pretty great, except the Duke w/ jetpack. It's great to get some more accessories like JUMP packs, but I already bought that Duke mold twice. Wild Bill is looking better, the HISS Driver was better suited for the Target exclusive HISS Tank. However, the Viper, Spirit, and Snake Eyes are all looking great. This version of Snake Eyes was the one I had back in the day, so I'm glad it was updated. I was glad to see they went with the stereotype version of Spirit. I liked the updated look he got in DTC, but this is an anniversary line. The Viper is going to be bloody, just like the Crimson Guard in wave 5. Hasbro could get a lot of mileage out of this mold, by doing another Viper Pit set and selling us a bunch for $25. Major Bludd has been pushed back to wave 8.
